The Return is a short film produced and directed by Ryan Stopera, with a soundtrack produced by Owen Duckworth (O-D). The film and soundtrack will be officially released for streaming and download online on September 24th, 2021. The Return features a cast of talented Minnesota emcees, poets, producers, filmmakers, illustrators, and musicians including MaLLy, SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE, Tish Jones, tony the scribe, Xiaolu Wang, Chris Park, and Jarrelle Barton.

The film is set in a dystopian future in which our society is controlled by one powerful corporation who has outlawed art, music, cultural practices, and any form of dissent. The artists in the film connect to each other through recognizing the power of music in building community and in resistance. The soundtrack to the film takes the listener deep into this world and sets the vibe of both the harsh reality of the present and of joyful resistance through art, community, and culture.

The idea behind The Return was pulled together in 2018 as a way to explore the intersection of culture across African and Asian diasporas through hip-hop music and culture in an American urban context. It was also a way to dream about how artists of color, from multiple national and cultural backgrounds, might be able to build community through artistic practice and develop solidarity between people of African and Asian descent in resistance to racism and other forms of oppression.

As artists based in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the creators of this project watched as aspects of the film that they were creating began playing out in strange ways in 2020. In the midst of a global pandemic that had locked down people in their homes, and with a racist and fascist regime in power in the White House, police in Minneapolis murdered a Black man, George Floyd, sparking an uprising locally and igniting a movement against police violence and white supremacy worldwide. The film suddenly felt like a more literal take on the world around us than the dystopian future that it had initially envisioned.

In sharing The Return and the accompanying soundtrack, the creators of this project hope it serves as a reminder and celebration of the power of art, music, and culture, especially in these chaotic and uncertain times we are living in.
